Bisping vs. Leben headlines UFC 89

Bisping has shown an impressive ability to control his opponents on the ground, as well as doing damage with his 'sharp' elbows.

UFC 89 will be heading back to England on October 18th, and the main event will feature Michael "The Count" Bisping against Chris "The Crippler" Leben.  This match that was supposed to take place at UFC 85, but legal troubles for Chris Leben put a hold on the fight.

There’s been a real negative vibe surrounding this event in the MMA community.  Some fans are saying the card is weak and some have even dismissed the event due to the lack of a title match on the card. It is expected that the UFC’s viewership will suffer due to the unattractive matchups.  We here at The Savage Science couldn't disagree more.  We’re of the opinion that it is a great choice for a main event match, not to mention a very solid undercard....and it’s free on Spike TV!

The main event should be an action packed slugfest. Michael Bisping has recently entered the middleweight division, and has won his first two fights in the new weight class by TKO. He’s looking to continue his winning streak in his home country of England.  Bisping is a well rounded fighter with great hands, with 11 of his 16 wins coming from some form of knockout.  If Bisping can win this matchup there’s a strong likelihood that a middleweight title shot will be forthcoming.

Chris Leben enters this fight coming off of a pair of impressive  back to back KO wins, most recently over Alessio Sakara at UFC 82 and against Terry Martin at UFC Fight Night 11.  Leben is certainly the more experienced fighter in this matchup, and has shown steady improvement since his early days on “The Ultimate Fighter” TV show.   Leben most likely has the better hands, and will be anxious to stop Bisping on his home soil.  With a win at UFC 89, Leben would be one step closer to facing the Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva.  Silva defeated Leben in the past (Ultimate Fight Night 5) and would love nothing more to avenge the quick first round KO loss he suffered courtesy of Silva's deadly knees.

Bisping will have to be very cautious in the standup with Leben.  He would be better served using clean, calculated strikes as opposed to getting into a slugfest with Leben.   Bisping has also demonstrated impressive ability at controlling his opponents once he can gain the dominant position on the ground.  He should favor a ground battle against Leben where he is clearly the better of the two as “The Crippler’s” unpredictable hands could deliver a devastating end to the match.

Chris Leben should approach this fight as “must win” scenario.  This is a proving ground for him and a win over the heavily favored Bisping would vault him to the upper ranks of the middleweight division.  Leben must try to keep this fight standing as he’s a dominant striker who has earned some impressive wins with his hands.  A ground battle isn’t the best choice for Leben and should be avoided if possible.  The longer the fight goes, and especially on the ground, the more it will favor Bisping.  Leben should go for the power punches and look to end the fight early.

Even if Bisping/Leben isn’t the most highly anticipated event of the year, we at SAVSCI are geeked about this matchup. On paper, it could become one of the most exciting slugfests of the year.  At the very least, it should be a very solid fight between two great warriors vying a title shot.
