MMA and the DVR Addiction

I am a white, 38-year-old heterosexual married man who loves MMA.

My name is Mike Wilkerson, and I am an DVR'd MMA Fight Junkie.

(Crowd says, “Hi, Mike...”)

It all started more than a year ago - on Father's Day - a warm a sun-shiny day that allowed me to revel in the brilliant experience that is fatherhood.  We had returned from a day out at our local residential park, complete with Bar-B-Q, cold drinks, beach balls and sunburn - ah, how the white irish skin of the Wilkerson clan burns a lobstah-red.  While taking a delicious ice-cold shower to begin the reversal of red-skinned fortune, my wife came to the bathroom to tell me about this "thing" she saw on television while channel surfing.  "Some men are fighting - in a big cage, and some are wrestling!"

Wrestling?

You mean like really "wrestling" like the Olympics or collegiate wrestling, or some of the WWE gooney goo goo crap that my nephews are all into?  Being an avid wrestling fan and participant all through high school, my curiosity was peaked and after another few cold moments of  as-cold-as-it-can-get bliss and obligatory but unwelcomed extreme shrinkage, I made my towel-clad way into "The Shire" - our Lord of the Rings theme inspired home theater.

There on the screen was something that INSTANTLY engaged me.  Two grown men, not just whaling on each other, but making an effort to be the best man in an all out competition to be the last guy standing/moving in the cage.  I had seen what was my first "Mixed Martial Arts" fight and was instantly "hooked" as surely as if it had been in a syringe and injected into my arm.  Ahhh, the burn is smooooth...

It was the first of many HDNet fights I had seen on our two-month-old plasma screen television and was in FULL HD. Kenny Rice and Jeff Blatnick (a personal hero and role model of mine - the man is literally golden) called the action in what is essentially the evolution of what was once "NO HOLDS BARRED CAGE FIGHTING" - the difference is that there was now a doctor, rules, and rankings to put fighters  into, that allowed for true ranks, procedures - all  the things that make professional sports - PROFESSIONAL.  And the story could end there - but it doesn't.

For the next several months, I raked through the Digital Video Recorder (DVR) Listings to find everything I could about "Extreme Fighting", Fighter, Cagefighting – everything that was available to record so that I could have at LEAST a tiny taste of it each evening before heading to the studio for podcast duty, editing, article writing, whatever, and my friends - the taste was sweet.  Whether it was the taste of seeing a don't-blink-12-second knock out, the circling of two great opponents who understand that the man they're standing opposite against could end their evening with one blow, or the madcap wrangling of a double-leg takedown and armbar by any one of the now clearly great fighters - they all left me with a thirst for more.  And my DVR, attached to my plasma screen, attached wirelessly to my arm via the remote control, was tied directly to my happy vein each and every time I watched another great fight.

New fights came, reruns of past battles came and went.  Most of them were closed captioned offering my wife the opportunity to share in the trivia, knowledge and "behind the scenes" nature that is provided during so many fights.  I was truly on a high, just as if I had a giant silver spoon, a gigantic lighter, a pillow of cotton and my plasma screen hovering over it, melting out every delicious drop of DVR'd fighting pleasure...

And then it all stopped.

You guessed it - RERUNS had taken over my entire listing/stash of DVR'd fighting goodness.  Suuure, I had the ability to go back and see some of the best fights of this year and previous.  I certainly had access to the clips-put-together shows from HDNet, yeah, yeah, but GONE were the original moments that had made me a fiend to the fight.  A daisy to the captivating drip of blood, sweat and Kah-RasH! of a spinning backfist.

The spiral downward had begun and I would have to wait until one of the many upcoming events (listed on the SavageScience.Com Website by the way) was revealed so as to plan and anticipate newfound fixes for my addiction.  Oh, the twist and pull of detoxification is so unfair!

So what's an MMA-DVR Addict to do?  Do you have some ideas on how I can combat my on-going need for the taste of the savage science?   Are you too tired of seeing the "Best of" in front of a title for a battle that has come and gone several times over the last year or more?  Chime in here at The Savage Science and help a fellow addict come up with a "new fix" that soothes the Savage Science-Addicted Beast.
