Aoki’s second round fight postponed

Shina Aoki salutes the announcement of the fight postponement. He'll now fight Katsuhiko Nagata at DREAM.4 on June 15th

At a press conference in Tokyo today DREAM announced that Shinya Aoki’s second round matchup against Katsuhiko Nagata has been postponed until June 15th. The Aoki/Nagata matchup becomes the first ‘official’ bout scheduled for the DREAM.4 card though a heavyweight bout between Mirko Cro Cop and Jerome Lebanner is all but certain to be added.

Though Aoki’s doctor indicated that the Japanese fighter had suffered some cartilage damage to his nose in his DREAM.2 win over JZ Calvan which could hamper his breathing in the short term, there was no indication of longterm damage. Furthermore, the doctor indicated that there was no reason these injuries wouldn’t be healed in sufficient time to allow Aoki to fight in mid-June.

The tone of the press conference was one of relief, and everyone concerned seemed to be happy with the resolution to a week of speculation about Aoki’s status for DREAM.3, the severity of his injuries and his further participation in the lightweight GP tournament. Aoki promised that he’d be 100% “motivated"? when he stepped into the ring on June 15th and would “make good"? for having to reschedule the May 11th fight. DREAM representatives were obviously pleased that they were able to keep Aoki in the tournament. Even his opponent, Katsuhiko Nagata, expressed relief most likely because he now could focus his training on Aoki rather than a “mystery opponent"?.

Though many US MMA media outlets incorrectly reported the day after the event that Aoki had “withdrawn"?, what actually occurred was a week of speculation and high drama. This was heightened by the holiday week in Japan (“Golden Week"?) that made it difficult to get a conclusive medical evaluation on Aoki. There were a number of other curious components to the story, such as the relative absence of anything on Aoki from the Japanese fight media. At the same time there was behind the scene speculation ranging from Aoki’s injuries being legit to it being a negotiating tactic to get more money out of the promotion to it simply being a case of “Aoki being Aoki"?.

With the rescheduled bout, the only apparent downside is an even more muddled tournament bracket. Obviously, the LWGP loses a lot of its luster without Aoki in the mix as he may very well be the best in the world at the weight class. He’s certainly among the most entertaining and charismatic fighters at any weight. DREAM gets another big fight to go along with Mirko/Lebanner for DREAM.4, and creates some more “buzz"? for the event.

Of course with Aoki involved, there could very likely be some more interesting developments before June 15th. THE SAVAGE SCIENCE will keep you informed with the Internet’s most up-to-date and accurate English language reporting on the Japanese MMA scene. We’ll also have live round by round coverage of DREAM.3 and DREAM.4, along with the May 18th World Victory Road card headlined by a heavyweight matchup between Josh Barnett and Jeff Monson.
