WEC spotlights Pulver vs. Faber

Urijah Faber is on the brink of superstardom. A win on national TV over tough Jens Pulver could solidify that status. Urijah Faber is on the brink of superstardom. A win on national TV over tough Jens Pulver could solidify that status.

WEC 34 will be bringing MMA fans an exciting fight featuring Urijah Faber against Jens Pulver for the featherweight championship live on VERSUS June 1st. The promotion will have the chance to step up and no longer be portrayed as the minor leagues to the UFC with this matchup. This fight is creating buzz everywhere in the world of MMA and will be most likely the biggest night in WEC history.

Former UFC Lightweight Champion Jens Pulver will be looking to add another title to his collection, but standing in his way is a MMA superstar nicknamed "The California Kid". Both fighters have expressed how important this bout is for them, and how they are training hard and very focused as could very well determine who is the best featherweight in the world. Unlike recent fights involving the two men, there is a mutual respect evident suggesting that they’re ready to do whatever it takes to claim the title.

This matchup can swing either way, and will be dictated on which fighter take charge early in fight. There will be no opportunity for ‘feeling each other out’ since that strategy would result in the match ending quicker than Keith Jardine’s KO loss at UFC 84. For anyone who is a fan of the lighter weight classes this is a ‘can’t miss’ fight with no doubt that it will be contested at a fierce pace.

Jens Pulver is on a tear, winning his last match against Cub Swanson by anaconda choke at WEC 31. In this match Pulver showed good match-ending submission skills and dominated a tough opponent in what appeared to an easy win for him. The heated words for weeks building up to the match between the two lasted longer than the actual match itself, which was all of 35 seconds.

This will no doubt be the biggest test for Faber to date, but a win at WEC 34 will solidify his legacy as one of the greatest champions this sport has seen.

If Pulver is to win this match against Urijah Faber he will most likely have to do it from his feet. Posting a perfect 8-0 record at 145 lbs proves that Faber will have to be at his best to defeated Pulver. Pulver is known for his striking ability (he is also 4-0 as a professional boxer) but few realize that his base is actually grappling. He simply hasn’t had the opportunity to show it due to his tremendous standup skills. He is considered to be arguably the top striker in the 145 lb class.

Urijah Faber comes into this match with a record of 20-1, and is considered by many to be the #1 featherweight in the world. Faber has won 12 straight, and his only defeat came in a match contested in the 155 weight class. Faber possesses wonderful submission defense, which he demonstrated in his last match, a victory over highly rated Gracie Jiu-Jitsu black belt Jeff Curran. Not only did he defend well but proved dominant at executing his own submissions earning a victory by guillotine choke. Faber is just an extremely well rounded fighter who’s also solid in both striking and kicking.

WEC 34 has several great matchups, but this one is by far the best on the card. Not just because its a championship fight, but fans know what these guys bring which is creating a high level of excitement and anticipation. Pulver, once dismissed as a ‘one dimensional’ fighter, is out to prove himself as a dominant force in the featherweight division against a kid who just can’t seem to be beaten. In a prefight interview, Faber had nothing but praise for his opponent: "It'll be an honor to fight that guy. I have a lot of respect for him. Let's do this" Faber has conceded that Jens Pulver is a dangerous fighter, and this respect has served as a motivational tool in his training. Not surprisingly, he claims he’ll keep the belt and continue his reign.

Pulver has also displayed a lot of respect for his younger opponent in several interviews, and seems to be really focused on this fight. And a focused Jens Pulver is definitely a formidable opponent. When interviewed by Leah Garcia on the VERSUS Network Jens said, "This isn't one of those things where we are gonna be talking a lot of trash and hating on each other....I think he is a great fighter and a great champion....but he's got the belt, and I want that belt."

There are countless uncertainties surrounding this fight. Will this fight go the distance? Will Pulver use his heavy hands to knock out Faber? Will Faber dominate the ground game? Not only is the result of this fight impossible to accurately predict, but its tough to clearly visualize the style or tempo the bout will take either. This aura of unpredictability is exactly is what is drawing so much attention to the WEC 34 card. The only guarantee that this fight will have is that Pulver will have a crazy hairstyle.

Other fighters on the card include Chase Beebe, Rob McCullough, Jeff Curran, and Miguel Torres.

Wow. I'm speechless. What an amazing performance by these two blokes. Pulver is incredible, the whacks he took, and then he just grins and nods his head. Faber is extremely talented, very strong, and has the laid back charisma and boyish charm, to become as he says, this sports first real superstar (as in he will become the pivitol face for the game, taking it to the common people, especially the common teenage female people). As for me. Well as a newcomer from two weeks ago, what more of a welcome could I want to cross from the squared circle into the caged octagon, than a man named Miguel Angel Torres coming in to mariachi music and looking like Jorge Arce with an extra 5 inches. The man carried the mexican warrior mentality and just won me completely. BJ Penn was a great way to introduce me to the sport, Faber v Pulver was a thrilling way to show what incredible match ups it can make, but my flag carrying t-shirt wearing this is the man I want to follow in this game loyalty, belongs, as it should, to a mexican. Miguel Angel Torres, you the man. (And Jim, as promised, I too a bunch of copies of Savage Science home page tto the Dog House with me and handed them out, encouraging those present to pay you a visit. Members of Cayman's own MMA Team Ironshore were there so hopefully they will spread the word and help to give you a good following before the official launch in August. I am looking forward to your report on the fights, and may repost there if that is okay). Toonoy andy
