Taylor stops Fickett in first round at Sycuan

'Ultimate Fighter' alum Jesse Taylor and Drew Fickett after their bout'Ultimate Fighter' alum Jesse Taylor and Drew Fickett after their bout

Sycuan Ringside Promotions, a San Diego based boxing promotions company, made their first foray into mixed martial arts as they teamed up with Diana Ocampo and her M.M.A company “Total Combat” for an evening of well matched fights in front of a sold out crowd of 2800 plus. The event which was billed as "Total Combat 32: Notorious" took place at an outdoor venue constructed adjacent to The Sycuan Casino.

In the main event, former Ultimate Fighter cast member, Jesse Taylor (7-3), stopped Drew Fickett (35-7) in the first round in a catch weight bout fought at 175 pounds. Taylor came out and took matters to the ground from the first second as Fickett tried to work from his back. It was Taylor’s superior size and bull-like strength that made the difference as he unleashed some brutal elbows that opened up a two inch gash on the Tucson, Arizona native’s fore head. After a few more shots and a lot of blood, the referee jumped in and stopped the bout.

Ring announcer, Manny Hernandez, announced the stoppage as 1:42 of the first round. “I was disappointed that we didn’t keep the fight on our feet,” said Taylor after the fight.

A good win for Taylor who fights out of Temecula over a well regarded fighter in Fickett.

McCall thoroughly dominates Dunsmoor

Ian McCall (7-1) from Dana Point took on Kevin Dunsmoor of San Diego in a 135 pound scrap. Both men exchanged hard leg kicks at the start of the first round. A right hand by Dunsmoor dropped McCall and the fight went to the ground where McCall maneuvered into a dominant top position. McCall transitioned into a side mount and landed some effective elbows to Dunsmoor’s face. More excellent groundwork by McCall as he attained the full mount. Dunsmoor rolled over and McCall got his back. He continued to pound the side of Dunsmoor’s face. He was on the verge of locking in a rear naked choke just as the round ended.

The second round was more ground and pound success for McCall as he dominated Dunsmoor and landed an assortment of knees and elbows from the half mount. McCall got into full mount and almost ended the fight after landing several blows to the face but Dunsmoor hung tough.

The third round started strong for Dunsmoor as he landed some nice strikes. McCall again took it to the ground and quickly moved into a side mount and proceeded to land several straight punches and elbows. McCall got the full mount again and landed continuously. Dunsmoor was again on the verge of being stopped but took his beating until the very last second. The decision went to McCall by unanimous decision.

Perez crushes a game Alvarado

Rolando Perez of San Diego faced off against Nick Alvarado of the San Pasqual reservation in Valley Center in a 140 pound fight. The fight was a good display of striking ability between two men eager to mix it up. It was Perez who proved to be the superior striker as he landed repeatedly on the very game Alvarado. It was a left hand that eventually dropped Alvarado and Perez kept the punches coming. A bloodied and gutsy Alvarado managed to make it to the end of the round. It was between rounds that the referee decided that Alvarado had enough as he called off the bout before the start of the second round.

Beltran 'mexicutes' Fenton

Joey “The Mexicutioner” Beltran of Carlsbad knocked out Wes Fenton of El Cajon in the first round of a heavyweight bout at 2:15. Fenton rushed in and tried to swarm Beltran’s attack with some success. Maybe it was the low kick to Beltran’s groin that woke him up. After a brief recuperation period, Beltran went to work furiously and landed several rights and lefts which dropped Fenton. Beltran followed Fenton to the ground and landed a volley of accurate punches which prompted the referee to stop the fight. Beltran is an exciting and devastating striker whose style is definitely fan friendly.

Other bouts:

170 pounder Herman Tarado of Guam knocked out John Mercurio of Huntington Beach. After surviving some initial problems in the first round, it was Tarado’s ground and pound that made all the difference as he slammed some brutal elbows on Mercurio and scored a technical knock out at 2:31 of the second round.

Erin Beach, out of Chula Vista, defeated David Reeder by first round knockout with a vicious right hand in a 155 pound bout.

135 pounder, John Mac, won a unanimous decision over Yosuko Koreda of Irvine. Koreda lost one point in the first round for kicking to the face while both men were on the ground.

David Galindo of Poway defeated Matt Lagler of San Diego by rear naked choke in the second round of a185 pound bout. Galindo totally dominated his opponent on the ground and eventually secured the choke at 3:05.

Molly Helso submitted Amber Tackett in the first round by rear naked choke in a female bout
